RECORD-BREAKING $29 MILLION RAISED AT UJA-FEDERATION OF NEW YORK'S WALL STREET DINNER
NEW YORK, Dec. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- UJA-Federation of New York's Wall Street Dinner, one of New York City's leading philanthropic events, raised a record-breaking $29 million for UJA-Federation's annual campaign. The sold-out dinner on December 11, 2017, drew more than 2,000 attendees. Last year's Wall Street Dinner raised $28 million.
Keynote speaker Robert E. Rubin presented the night's highest honor, the Gustave L. Levy Award, to Howard W. Lutnick, chairman and CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald L.P. Secretary Rubin shared many personal memories of working for Levy at Goldman Sachs and the traits that made him a legendary philanthropist and professional. Rubin said it was Levy who brought himself, and so many others that were in the room, into the UJA community. Goldman Sachs alumnus and major UJA supporter, Daniel S. Och, who had previously worked for Rubin, introduced the honoree portion of the program, which included the Alan C. Greenberg Young Leadership Award being presented to Lee Fixel, partner at Tiger Global Management, LLC.
The night included UJA Chair of the Board Robert S. Kapito praising the leadership of the Wall Street community: "My colleagues and partners here tonight believe so passionately in UJA and its power to effect positive, meaningful change. We appreciate their commitment of time, of generosity, and their dedication to help UJA light the way for the work we do."
The evening also capped off UJA's centennial year, and Jeffrey A. Schoenfeld, president of UJA, proudly discussed the three major capital centennial projects that UJA launched in 2017: building a cultural arts center in the heart of Jerusalem, designing two Community Resource Hubs offering full wrap-around social services to vulnerable members of the community, and transforming three campuses on the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds, that provide a rich and meaningful camp experience for tens of thousands of children.
Schoenfeld also unveiled UJA's plans for 2018: "We will continue to invest in the future of our fellow New Yorkers by stepping up the fight against poverty in a major way, with crucial services to help take someone from crisis to stability to self-sufficiency. And in Israel, we're investing in the next generation of Israelis, to encourage better paths to education for those who have been left outside looking in. We're continue investing in relief and recovery for people across the globe — anywhere people are struggling to rebuild lives after earthquakes, floods, and devastating natural disasters. After the fall hurricanes, we provided more than $4 million in relief to Houston, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean, as well as 28 flights carrying over 75,000 pounds of humanitarian and medical supplies."
John A. Paulson, chair of UJA's Wall Street and Financial Services Division, introduced Rubin, former U.S. Treasury secretary and co-chairman emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, whose address also praised the work of UJA. "UJA-Federation is powerful not only in serving Jewish needs, but serving our society overall," Rubin said.
Among those also in attendance were Samantha Greenberg, managing partner and chief investment officer, Margate Capital Management LP; Jimmy Levin, co-chief investment officer, Och-Ziff Capital Management Group; Morris W. Offit, chairman, Offit Capital; Andrew Rechtschaffen, founder, Arex Capital; Esta Eiger Stecher, chair, Board of Directors, The Goldman Sachs Bank USA; Stephanie J. Stiefel, managing director, Neuberger Berman; and James S. Tisch, CEO, Loews Corporation.
