Register Now for Chicago’s North Shore Century Bicycle Ride: Sept. 18 Event Has Scenic Routes for Cycling Enthusiasts of All Ages, Abilities
Evanston, IL (PRWEB) June 07, 2016 -- Bicycling enthusiasts of all ages and abilities can register now to reserve their space in this year’s North Shore Century invitational ride (http://tinyurl.com/ht6toqx). Now in its 32nd year, the popular event, nicknamed “the last ride of the summer,” takes place Sunday, Sept. 18, with four fully supported route options -- 25 miles, 50 miles, 62 miles and 100 miles – all winding through Chicago’s scenic North Shore.
“It’s an area known for luxurious neighborhoods, unique architectural treasures and overlooks of Lake Michigan,” explained Tom Witt, president of the Evanston Bicycle Club, which organizes the event to raise money for bicycling related programs and nonprofits. Proceeds from 2015 enabled the club to donate $33,000 to groups such as Active Transportation Alliance, Blackstone Bicycle Works, Bronzeville Bikes, Ride Illinois, West Town Bikes, Working Bikes and The Recyclery Collective.
“Couples and teams of adults ride the North Shore Century together, parents ride the shorter distances with their children, while many other adults ride solo,” said EBC’s Suzie LaBelle, North Shore Century ride chair. “The routes are well-marked and well-mapped. Frequent, fully staffed rest stops offer a wide variety of food options, and bike mechanics and SAG vehicles are available for those who need them.”
All rides begin and end at Evanston’s Dawes Park, situated on the lakefront with easy access to public transportation and parking. Outbound routes head north -- as far as Kenosha, Wis., for the 100-milers. Along the way, depending on the distance, riders pass by: the Baha’i House of Worship (Wilmette), Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes (Glencoe), Ravinia Festival (Highland Park), historic Fort Sheridan, Lamb’s Farm (Libertyville), and Waukegan, birthplace of writer Ray Bradbury and childhood home of entertainer Jack Benny.
Due to the ride’s popularity, early registration is encouraged. Individuals over age 16 can register for $30 through mid-August, $40 after that, or $50 the day of the ride, if space is available. Children 16 and under can register for $10 and must be accompanied by a registered adult rider. For more information, or to register, visit http://tinyurl.com/ht6toqx. Registration is also available via Active.com.
“Not only is the North Shore Century considered ‘the last ride of the summer,’ but many call it ‘the best ride of the summer,’” LaBelle said.
