Release Mobile Builds SystemSync, a Data-Sharing Application for Business Users, on Cloudant DBaaS
Boston (PRWEB) December 17, 2013 -- Cloudant, provider of a globally distributed database-as-a-service (DBaaS), today announced that software development consultancy Release Mobile has built the back end of its business applications on Cloudant’s NoSQL database service running on IBM SoftLayer. Additionally, Release Mobile is using Microsoft Windows Azure to host its application servers.
Release Mobile’s SystemSync application is a data-collection platform architected on top of file-sharing services, including Google Drive, Box, Dropbox and SkyDrive. The platform enables business users to easily collect and store data from multiple sources, as well as properly format it to automate the entry and integration of that data in the business’s own information systems. On a technical level, it saves information architects from manual data-loading tasks like extract-transform-load (ETL) processes. On a business level, SystemSync saves companies time and money when collecting data from external partners, especially business partners who cannot operate traditional electronic data interchange (EDI) systems. If business partners can edit a spreadsheet, then they can send clean, well-structured data automatically via SystemSync.
“When we got to the point where we had to start considering the scalability and distributed nature of our application, we realized that we frankly didn’t want to be managing the database infrastructure for SystemSync,” said Release Mobile CTO Ian Cox. “We wanted to be able to concentrate on developing our product and were encouraged by Cloudant’s expertise in data management and service. When first designing the application, Cox realized the need for a document-oriented database based on JavaScript Object Notation (JSON). To easily capture data from inside and outside the organization collecting it, the flexible database schema and relative lighter weight of storing records as JSON documents were the right fit for SystemSync’s application programming interface (API) and for the secure transport of data over the network. Release Mobile started by developing on a single-server JSON data store, but when the database was not sharding well to scale across multiple servers, Release Mobile began looking for more seamless options and ultimately chose Cloudant.
SystemSync's application uses a multiple data center topography. Cloudant runs on infrastructure from IBM SoftLayer that is optimized for back-end systems, while SystemSync's application servers run on Microsoft's Windows Azure cloud platform, which is optimized for application workloads.
