REMI Offers Real Estate Professionals Tips on Word Choice

The Insider offered its advice after a July 11 news report in The Wall Street Journal announced the results of a research study conducted by New Zealand’s University of Otago. The lead researcher, Kirsten Robertson, wanted to know how market conditions affected the most effective or consistently-used words in real estate listings and advertisements. The study, entitled “An Empirical Investigation of Variations in Real-Estate Marketing Language over a Market Cycle,” suggested a strong correlation between listing word choice and market conditions. It stated that listings in strong markets use emotive, descriptive, and colorful words, whereas listings published in weak markets will use words with economic connotations. For example, a real estate listing published in a strong real estate market may do well with words like “sunshine,” “bright,” or “beautiful,” while weak-market listings are likely to utilize “value,” “cheap,” or “must-go” to describe their properties. Simply put, strong-market listings appeal to the heart, where as weak-market listings appeal to the wallet.
