Reno Dog Training Author Opens First Of Several Dog Training Locations In Nevada
Reno, Nevada (PRWEB) January 28, 2014 -- Reno dog training author Adam G. Katz has announced the opening of, “Katz Trains Dogs” – a Reno, Nevada based dog training company that can get your dog to listen to you, anywhere you go.

The timing was right to open a dog training company in Reno. The past two decades have seen a tremendous growth in dog ownership. December 2013 pet adoptions are up 15 percent over December 2012, and overall adoptions for 2013 are up 13 percent, the SPCA of Northern Nevada reported recently. Dog adoptions are up 3.5 percent and cat adoptions are up 26 percent over last year.
“For the past twenty-two years, people have joked about my last name (pronounced, 'Cats'),” said Katz, who is 43 years-old and began training dogs professionally while he was a student at the University of California at Berkeley.
But dog training is no joke to a man who has written nine dog training books, seven-hundred articles and publishes a free weekly dog training tips newsletter that is read by more than sixty-six thousand dog owners, internationally.
“Previously, I had owned dog training companies in Los Angeles, California and Las Vegas, Nevada,” said Katz. “When the internet got popular in 1997, I started publishing my newsletter at Dogproblems.com and when my dog training books began to sell, I put everything in storage and spent several years traveling the world and swapping techniques with some of the best dog trainers I could find.”
Katz settled in Reno, Nevada three years ago. “I like the weather and the outdoor activities here,” said Katz. “It struck me as a good place to settle down.”
Katz's wife, Carla Katz-- a professional oil painter originally from Bogota, Colombia-- didn't like him sitting behind a computer for so many hours every day.
“It was obvious to me that the computer was giving him migraines,” said his wife. “He needs to be outside breathing fresh air and working with the dogs instead of huddled behind a computer.”
For days when it's too cold (or hot) to be training dogs outside, Katz has leased a 1300 square foot climate controlled training facility near Longley Lane and South McCarran Boulevard.
“I'm excited about helping dog owners in Northern Nevada,” said Katz. “But Reno is only the first step in helping me to further rehabilitate good dogs with bad behavior.”
He plans to open additional locations in Carson City, Las Vegas and Sacramento, California.
“There is a huge demand for what we teach,” said Katz. “We specialize in fixing aggression problems in dogs. There are many 'cookie bribery' trainers who have read a book about dog training and think they know everything-- but you cannot stop serious behavior problems with cookie bribery. That's how people lose fingers. You cannot throw hotdogs at an aggressive dog and expect to fix the problem.”
“A balanced approach to dog training works much better in my experience,” said Katz. “And the result is a happy, emotionally well-adjusted dog that no longer has to feel stressed or anxious.”
“We use a technique based dog training system,” said Katz. “so that you can take your dog anywhere and know that he (or she) will listen to you-- even around other dogs, cats, food or tennis balls.”
Katz owns a nine year-old Golden Retriever named, “Juan Valdez” who waits patiently as he throws a tennis ball for the young gun in the family, “Dolly” a one year-old Border Collie/Red Heeler-mix. “It really comes down to teaching the owner how to communicate with their dog so that commands are both understood and have meaning,” said Katz. “And using a system that is flexible enough to adapt to each individual dog's temperament. Some dogs respond well to a light tug on the leash and a rub on the chest while other dogs blossom with the use of a remote collar that can be adjusted to perfectly match their dog's individual temperament.”
“You cannot get locked into the use of only one tool,” said Katz. “A good trainer will let each individual dog's temperament tell him which approach to use.”
Katz works exclusively with dog owners in a one-on-one setting and he limits the number of clients he will work with each month. “I've already got a waiting list of people who want to work with me,” said Katz. “So, I screen each dog owner to make sure they are motivated to learn and work with their dog. It's a partnership: We are teaching the owner as much as the dog.”
Fortunately, the dogs are always motivated to learn, according to Katz.
“Training the dog is the easy part,” said Katz. “Training the owner is more challenging.”
