Renowned Austin Plastic Surgeon Completes Study on Facelift Closure Techniques and Scarring
AUSTIN, TX (PRWEB) October 06, 2017 -- Edward Buckingham, MD is pleased to announce that his recent research on hairline scarring, following the rhytidectomy procedure, has been published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The blind study, involving 46 patients, was completed by Dr. Buckingham and his associate, Sundeep Roy, MD. The Comparison of W-Plasty and Straight-Line Trichophytic Closure on Aesthetic Outcomes of Occipital Hairline Scars in Rhytidectomy was published in the August 24th edition of JAMA.
Drs. Buckingham and Roy compared the surgical success rates and post-op scarring of the W-plasty closure with the traditional, straight-line (SL) trichophytic closure technique. Through a blind evaluation, Drs. Buckingham and Roy assessed the occurrence of posterior occipital hairline scars at one year post-op.
The retrospective cohort study involved a group of patients receiving the rhytidectomy at the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, between 2014 and 2015. Of the rhytidectomy patients, 23 cases used the W-plasty closure technique, and 23 involved straight-line closures, all placed along the posterior occipital hairline. Three nonphysician medical staff used a modified Manchester Scar Scale, in a blind photographic analysis of pictures taken at the one year post-op mark.
Dr. Buckingham’s research concluded that the primary W-plasty closure yielded results significantly similar to the traditional SL trichophytic closure technique. Each provided comparable aesthetic outcomes throughout a wide range of patients. With equivalent cosmesis ratings, Drs. Buckingham and Roy determined that no singular technique is superior over the other. Both the W-plasty and the SL trichophytic closure techniques can be used to achieve successful rhytidectomy results, with minimal conspicuous scarring.
