Report Linking Robotic Surgery Complications to Aggressive Marketing by Intuitive Surgical Disturbs Wright & Schulte LLC

At the same time, Bloomberg found that reports of Da Vinci surgery complications have also increased, with the device having been allegedly linked to 70 deaths in informal incident reports sent to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) since 2009. During the first 8 months of this year, reports of Da Vinci injuries to the FDA have doubled, according to Bloomberg.
Disturbing Interviews Regarding Robotic Surgery
Wright & Schulte LLC found Bloomberg’s interview with the executive medical director for perioperative services at Massachusetts General Hospital particularly disturbing. He discussed how Intuitive Surgical sales reps bombarded the hospital in an attempt to convince Massachusetts General to partner with the company, by either providing doctors with training on the device, conducting robot surgery symposiums or advertising the benefits of the Da Vinci. The sales reps’ advances were soundly rejected by the hospital, which only employs robotic surgery on a very limited basis, with the executive telling Bloomberg that Intuitive Surgical’s marketing “has pushed the limits of truth.”
In another interview, a 41-year-old California woman who suffered serious bowel injuries in a Da Vinci hysterectomy described how she was enticed to undergo robotic surgery after viewing a YouTube video and brochure that touted the supposed advantages of such procedures. “They are deceiving people,” she told Bloomberg. “People don’t hear the cons they only hear the pros.”
