“It’s no secret that Florida roads are among the deadliest across the United States, and well-traveled routes such as I-95 and other highways remain roads where drivers are most at risk,” Glatthorn said. “What’s so upsetting is that many of these Florida highway accidents could have been prevented. All it takes is a split second of inattention – essentially the time it takes to read a text message on a cell phone – to cause a serious accident. All it takes is for one driver who drank too much alcohol to collide with another vehicle and destroy someone’s life.”
Glatthorn urges drivers to remain alert and sober to keep themselves and other safe on highways such as I-95 or the Florida Turnpike.
According to the Naples Herald, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reports that more than half of fatal accidents occur on state and federal roads. The state recorded 2,407 fatalities in traffic accidents in 2013, which puts Florida behind California and Texas for most fatalities in any U.S. state.
The Naples Herald reports that I-95 in particular remains one of the deadliest roads in the state. According to the article, the highway stretches 382 miles along the eastern side of the state – and runs through some of its most densely-populated areas. I-95 was once found by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to be the most fatal stretch of highway in the country.
“The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles finds that the top causes of fatal accidents are linked to drivers impaired by drugs or alcohol, distracted by cell phones, or who willingly ignore traffic signals or speed limits,” Glatthorn said. “These are preventable accidents. We support all efforts by law enforcement officials to enforce the state’s important traffic safety laws and take law-breaking drivers off our roads.”
