Research links bone problems to excessive alcohol consumption; Your Lifestyle Products comment
(PRWEB UK) 21 February 2014 -- It has been a long known fact that heavy drinking leads to weaker bones. Over the years, doctors have identified that alcoholics are more likely to suffer from bone fractures. A team of researchers from Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood Ill has now discovered that alcohol actually slows down bone healing at a cellular and molecular level reports Fox News on 7th October 2013 (http://www.foxnews.com/health/2013/10/07/why-hard-drinkers-have-problems-with-bones/).
This is particularly problematic for adolescents and young adults whose bodies are building calcium stores in the bone for long term bone health. According to Dr Roman Natoli, lead presenter of the study, “Many bone fractures are alcohol-related, due to car accidents, falls, shootings, etc...” Natoli went on to say that “In addition to contributing to bone fractures, alcohol also impairs the healing process.”
The findings came after experimentation with mice. The researchers had divided ordinary mice into two groups, where one had been exposed to alcohol levels equivalent to three times the legal limit for driving. From the results, the mice exposed to alcohol revealed less mineralization of callus, which means that not much bone was forming. The bone that did form was not strong.
Your Lifestyle Products commented on these findings: “Bones are constantly remodelling themselves to repair daily wear and tear. There is a correlation between bones and alcohol, it is vital that people understand the hidden impacts of alcohol consumption.”
