Restlet Launches APISpark, the First Platform-as-a-Service for Web APIs
Palo Alto, California (PRWEB) November 18, 2014 -- Restlet, creators of the most widely deployed framework for APIs, today announced the general availability of APISpark, a cloud service for developers seeking to quickly publish and manage APIs, and businesses that want to give application and website developers around the world access to their data. APISpark is available for free as a cloud solution for low-traffic projects with pricing that increases with usage.
APISpark leverages the Restlet Framework, the world’s most widely-used open source API framework with 2 million downloads and and a thriving community of 100,000 developers. The Restlet team is led by some of the world’s experts on representational state transfer (REST), a popular architectural style for software that allows developers and business to share data and software components as web APIs.
“We built APISpark based on a decade of experience working closely with open source and business software developers,” said Jerome Louvel, founder and chief geek for Restlet. “We’ve tried to make the perfect developer tool for API publishing and management, addressing the full project lifecycle, including design, documentation, creation of SDKs, version management, hosting and user registration.”
“We were able to participate in the early-access program of APISpark and found the platform amazingly easy to use, even for non-technical profiles,” said Marcelo Junior, a analyst in the HR division of CI&T, a global digital services company with more than 1,700 employees. “In less than a day, we were able to create and fully deploy web APIs used to publish open positions on our intranet, and to enable employees to apply to new challenges. I can say that the APISpark has transformed the work of one year in one day, simply and effectively."
Software developers can go to the APISpark site and use a web browser to securely create and publish REST APIs in minutes, exposing new or existing data sources. Experience with REST is not required.
Other features of APISpark include:
Automatic documentation of existing APIs hosted outside of APISpark, dynamically synced with the API source code;
Automatic client SDK generation for easy consumption by developers;
User management with roles and access rights;
API firewall including rate limitations to protect exposed resources;
API usage analytics.
Fully managed by Restlet, APISpark is hosted on the Amazon Web Services infrastructure for guaranteed scalability and quality-of-service.
“The world is moving toward everyone becoming both an API provider and an API consumer,” said Kin Lane, founder and head of API Evangelist and API Voice developer community sites. “In addition to helping both these API providers and consumers, APISpark also brings to non-technical people a much-needed solution to access content, data and digital resources they need to solve real-world problems.”
Customers can start with APISpark immediately by creating an account at http://restlet.com/apispark and selecting either a free plan or a paid plan. The free plan provides access to an enterprise-grade platform that includes design, deployment and management features for an unlimited number of APIs. Pricing scales with the number of simultaneously connected clients to the APIs. Paid plans start at $19 per month with no long-term commitment.
