Restoration of Here Today Mural from Town Tire Auto Service Centers
Gainesville, FL (PRWEB) July 29, 2015 -- Wood storks, sea turtles, black bears, manatees and pumas, Florida is rich with many species of animals that make this state so unique. Unfortunately, many of those animals are also endangered, and 13 years ago, Town Tire Auto Service Centers partnered with Melrose, FL artist Harimandir Khalsa to heighten awareness of that fact. One side of Town Tire’s location at 625 NW 8th Avenue in downtown Gainesville, FL is painted with a mural by Khalsa. The mural spells out “Here Today,” with images of endangered animals in each letter; the second half of that familiar expression is left implied. Unfortunately, the mural has faded over the years, despite Khalsa’s use of a UV-blocking clear coat.
That’s where Town Tire’s owner, Ernie Turbyfill, has recently stepped in. Turbyfill recently commissioned Khalsa to freshen the mural’s artwork, as part of their store’s exterior renovations, which was finished just a few weeks ago. The mural had become such a familiar and well-loved part of the community’s landscape that Town Tire Auto Service Centers received many questions about its fate when the panels were temporarily pulled down for repainting.
“My subject matter is almost always some kind of animal, and most of the animals I paint are endangered species,” said Khalsa. “The message is meant more as a question than a statement. This is an environmental awareness and public education project. It’s my hope that it will make people more aware of environmental issues and how much we really do have to lose if we don’t take care of what we have.”
