Retrofit Wellness Experts Report on How to Have a Healthier Halloween
Chicago, Ill. (PRWEB) October 13, 2015 -- The added calories and sugar in an average trick-or-treat bag may be scarier than any ghost or goblin this Halloween. So what is a parent to do? Registered dietitians from Retrofit, the leading corporate weight management program, provide the following tips on how to stay trim this time of year.
“Halloween is a high-calorie holiday,” said Dara Aronow, Registered Dietitian, Retrofit. “Use this day as an excuse to get active while spending quality time with your kids.”
Do the monster mash. Increase your steps and activity leading up to and during Halloween to offset the extra calories you consume around this holiday. Walk with your kids through a haunted house, corn maze and pumpkin patch and while trick-or-treating or do the good old monster mash. For the adventurous parents, check out a running app like Zombie, Run!
Lighten the loot for your little ghosts and goblins. The less time candy is in your house the better. Buy your candy as close to Halloween as possible and don’t overbuy. You and your kids will be less likely to break into the bag ahead of time, if you have a limited amount. You also will be less likely to have leftovers.
Beware of your habits. Do not skip meals and snacks. Pace yourself throughout the day, so you can make healthy choices. Be sure to drink enough water. Sometimes we can mistake thirst for hunger, and it can make reaching for Halloween candy even easier.
Disguise your candy. While Halloween is just one day a year, Halloween candy remains much longer. Keep leftover candy out of sight in a hard-to-reach place. The more difficult you make it to get to the treats, the less likely you and your kids are to go for it.
Carve out time for a treat in your day. If you and your kids do decide to enjoy a piece of candy, stick to miniatures and keep the treat to 100 calories. Slow your pace to savor every bite. Pay attention to what you’re eating. If you do that, you will enjoy your food much more, eat less and feel fully satisfied. If you aren’t mindful, you’re at risk for overeating.
Avoid the witching hour. Refrain from eating candy right before bed. The spike in blood-sugar levels will cause energy levels to surge and plummet, disrupting sleep, and lack of sleep can lead to weight gain.
