ReWalk Exoskeleton Lets Paraplegics Walk Again: New York Personal Injury Lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm Comments
New York, N.Y (PRWEB) July 18, 2014 -- Following the European Union's lead, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has finally given clearance for the ReWalk exoskeleton, a motorized system that allows those with spinal cord injuries to independently stand upright, turn and walk. Based on a CNET.com report (June 26, 2014), the ReWalk exoskeleton has allowed a number of paraplegics to walk again, but it was not until recently that individuals in the United States were actually able to buy one of these systems.
ReWalk exoskeletons work by attaching a wearable motorized brace to users, which they can then control with the aid of a computer and motion sensors, the report states. In this manner, paraplegics can stand up on their own, stand up straight, turn and even walk. Such movement helps those with spinal cord injuries get benefits they would not otherwise be able to achieve such as cardiovascular improvements, fat loss and muscle gain. The exoskeleton was developed by Israeli inventor Amit Goffer, who was rendered quadriplegic in 1997 after an ATV accident, the report states.
This device offers fresh hope for spinal cord injury victims, said New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. "Innovative devices such as these can certainly assist victims living with catastrophic injuries and help them gain some degree of mobility. In addition to the gains that rehabilitative treatments provide, these types of injured patients may now be able to walk again with the use of an exoskeleton system."
Those who have been rendered quadriplegic or paraplegic as a result of car accidents, slip-and-fall accidents or other traumatic events may benefit from this exoskeleton . "These are individuals who need long-term rehabilitation and round-the-clock care and assistance. The possibility of being able to walk again and have a better quality of life does give them and their families that much-needed glimmer of hope. Such devices offer not just physical benefits to patients, but a tremendous psychological boost as well."
