Rippin’ the Runway: Afro-Fusion Fashion Show Will Showcase Young African High-End Designers; A Tribute to #bringbackourgirls

The show’s producers have dedicated this year’s fashion show as a special tribute to the #bringbackourgirls campaign, in support of the Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by the terrorist group Boko Haram and international efforts to promote education of women and girls. “We hope to bring more attention to the #bringbackourgirls campaign, while also offering a rare opportunity to experience the creative vision of today’s hottest Nigerian designers,” said Chris Obinzu, the organizer of the “Rippin’ the Runway” show. Obinzu added, “This event also serves to promote the beauty of African culture to the world.” Obinzu, who lives in San Antonio, Texas, is a Nigerian-born designer and entrepreneur with more than 10 years’ experience in the fashion industry. The creator of the private label brand Chris Glory and the producer of “Faces 11” show in Tribeca during Fashion Week in New York, a show that introduces 11 up and coming high-end fashion designers to the industry will be one of the organizers of this event.
African themes have become popular in high-fashion circles. Designers who have used African prints and fabrics include Marc Jacobs, Givenchy, Eley Kishimoto, Jean Paul Gautier, Diane Von Furstenberg, Gwen Stefani, Dries van Noten, Kenzo, and Paul Smith to mention a few. While those are household names, the high-fashion world also includes some newer talent, including the African designers who will be showcased at “Rippin’ the Runway.”
“Rippin’ the Runway” blends the unique artistic worlds of fashion, music, and African culture. The fashion show features diverse models walking the runway showcasing designs by some of the hottest African designers, all to live musical performances. A traveling show, it has been produced elsewhere, but the Atlanta installment is expected to be bigger and better than ever before.
Founded in 1999, the Nigerian Reunion Corporation is a global organization whose primary purpose is to promote and strengthen the unity and honor of Nigerians and Nigerian descendants in the diaspora. The organization is committed to the following objectives:
