Rise in Heroin Use, Overdose Deaths in Michigan

While the count was 271 between 1999 and 2002, the toll increased to 728 during the 2010-2012 year range. He compared the price of both substances, noting that an 80-milligram pill can cost as much as $80 while a dose of heroin can be 10x's cheaper, at $8-10. Officials in Kent County alone have seen a huge increase in heroin-related stats. However, DEA officials confirmed that heroin is not limited to any one demographic area.
One former addict who was interviewed revealed that he got into drugs because the people he used with did not reflect the typical stereotype of a heroin user. He told reporters that he was under the assumption that people who did heroin were the kind who you see laying on the street. In his case, he did it with people who were well educated and had jobs. He also attributed his heroin use to drinking and using pot, which made him want to try more drugs. DEA officials also confirmed that heroin use can affect people of all socioeconomic statuses. Two bills are currently in the process of being passed in the local House of Representatives and Senate. One bill would allow better public access to Naloxone and the other would grant immunity to those who call in to report an overdose.
