Rising student accommodation costs could increase number of stay-at-home students
Cardiff (PRWEB UK) 3 September 2013 -- A new report from accommodationforstudents.com showed that the average weekly student rent has increased by over 3% since 2012, from £77.04 per week per bedroom to £79.42 in 2013.
According to the research, which was based on over 125,000 properties in 92 locations, the rising cost is being driven by soaring rents in the south of England. London is still the most expensive area to live as a student, with an average rental value of £129 per week. But other areas are catching up quickly, with Luton and Chatham seeing rises of 20% and 19% respectively since 2012.
Teacrate Packaging, part of the PHS Group, believes that the increase in rent will add to the growing trend of students remaining at home with their parents and commuting to university, particularly after the recent rise in tuition fees.
