Robert Zipf Jr., MD, Recognized for Achievements in Forensic Pathology
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C., Jan. 24, 2018 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Robert Zipf, Jr., MD, is a distinguished biographee of Marquis Who's Who. Some of his most well-known career achievements include converting a county coroner's system to a medical examiner's system, establishing a medical examiner system overseen by pathology residents, investigating deaths associated with radiation overdose, assisting in the design and installation of the earliest laboratory information systems and providing scholarships for higher education.
A respected voice in the scientific community, Dr. Zipf has contributed numerous articles to professional journals pertaining to his areas of expertise. He has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World. In addition, Dr. Zipf was selected for inclusion in the first edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, which was published in 1987. He is recognized as a fellow of the College of American Pathologists, American Academy of Forensic Sciences and American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Zipf received a Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University in 1962. He went on to complete an MD through Ohio State University in 1966. Upon completing an internship through Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, OH, in 1967, Dr. Zipf joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a major from 1967 to 1974. During this time, he was briefly recognized as a chief anatomic pathologist and consultant to the surgeon general. While completing military service, Dr. Zipf also worked as the director of forensic pathology with Duke University Health System in Durham, NC. He went on to serve the university as the director of autopsy pathology, and as an assistant professor, for one year. From 1974 to 1978, Dr. Zipf was recognized as the director of radioisotope pathology at Riverside Methodist Hospital, and as a forensic pathologist and deputy coroner in Columbus, Franklin County, OH. From 1978-2006 he served as Director of Laboratories at Nash Health Care Services, Rocky Mount, NC and also provided pathology services to hospitals in Edgecombe, Halifax and Franklin County, NC.
For more than 25 years, Dr. Zipf served as the president of R.E. Zipf, PA, Pathology Associates. He has been recognized as a regional forensic pathologist in Rocky Mount since 1978. Until 2006, Dr. Zipf also served as a regional forensic pathologist in North Carolina and as a director of laboratories with Nash Health Care Systems. He previously served as the president of the Nash County Medical Society in 1995, and president of the Laboratory Users Group at Shared Medical Systems in 1992. From 1989 to 1991, Dr. Zipf also served on the laboratory advisors board and clinical advisors board with SMS.
In an effort to remain alert of recent developments in the scientific community, Dr. Zipf maintains involvement with the Nash County Medical Society, North Carolina Medical Society, Association of Clinical Scientists and American College of Nuclear Medicine. He has served as a member of the board of trustees for Nash Community College and for North Carolina Wesleyan College, and as a member of the forensic advisory board for the North Carolina Department of Justice since 2012. Since the turn of the century, Dr. Zipf has lent his knowledge and expertise as an advisor to the Zipf Charitable Trust Fund. As an Eagle Scout and scout leader he has continued to support the Boy Scouts of America. He is also recognized as a founder of Clintrac Pathology Software. Prior to his retirement in 2006, he worked as a consultant in the fields of medical software, medical forensics and laboratory management.
