Robin Barker-James Releases New Title: The Last Trench Fighter: A War Hero Rises Again
(PRWEB) June 19, 2015 -- With visions of riches dancing in his head, Rapier sets in motion a massive marketing campaign to exploit the reluctant hero, including promotional tours and selling Farmer’s story and personal appearances to the highest bidder. As long as the bidder has national and international clout, and is willing to pony up seven figures sums for exclusives access, that is. And Rapier intends to cut himself a large percentage of that windfall.
Unscrupulous as well as ambitious, Rapier uses blackmail to force compliance from Farmer, even though our aged hero would rather live out his days quietly preserving the family homestead for posterity. As relations between the two grow from adversarial to downright life-threatening, an odd development takes place: the world becomes so enamoured of this living piece of history that Farmer becomes a larger-than-life symbol of a forgotten world on the cusp of shedding its chivalrous past and striding into an uncertain and brutish future.
Everywhere he goes, Farmer is mobbed and lionized by the public, as if he were Charles Lindbergh landing his plane on the first transatlantic solo flight. His vivid recollections of the famous battles of a lost generation strike a chord with young and old, and his presence takes on a mythical stature. But not without its price: weary of celebrity, eager to shake Rapier’s exploitative grip, and just plain bone-tired, Farmer wants to give it all up and return to obscurity. But short of killing him, how can he shake Rapier without exposing his own personal shortcomings?
In The Last Trench Fighter, historian, teacher and World War One authority Robin Barker-James launches the reader through a vivid arc combining war history and a compellingly told drama. Using his true-to-life battle re-creations as a backdrop to the battles between Farmer and Rapier, Barker-James propels the action toward a personal showdown that is as riveting as it is unexpected.
