Rockettes Tickets Get Kicks on BuyAnySeat.com
Denver, Colorado (PRWEB) November 25, 2013 -- The Rockettes were formed by Russell Markert in St. Louis, Missouri in 1925. Originally known as the Missouri Rockets, the dance team was inspired by the John Tiller Girls in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1922.
The troupe has been based out of Radio City Music Hall in New York City since 1932. And over the years, their most popular routine has become the eye-high kick performed in perfect unison along the lengthy 18-dancer chorus line.
Today, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes has become a New York Holiday tradition seen by more than a million visitors each year. Spurred by demand from fans across the country, two separate touring productions have been formed to make the show a tradition that can be enjoyed in other cities as well.
One traveling cast just wrapped at the Cobb Performing Arts Center in Atlanta on November 23 and performs at the Kravis Center – Dreyfoos Concert Hall in West Palm Beach November 29 – December 8. It moves to the Carol Morsani Hall – The Straz Center in Tampa, Florida December 12 – 29, 2013.
Another production is on an extended run at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee from November 16 through December 24, 2013. At the same time, of course, the original will perform at Radio City Musical Hall from November 8 through December 30, 2013, with further dates yet to be released.
“Thanks in part to the new touring casts, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular becomes more popular each year,” said Felina Martinez at online ticket marketplace BuyAnySeat.com.
“Although most shows typically sell out, we’re proud to offer fans the most comprehensive and continuously refreshed selection of theatre tickets online, with a worry-free guarantee to protect their purchase.
“In fact, we have a great inventory of Rockettes tickets now available on our site,” said Marrtinez. “Customers can simply go to BuyAnySeat.com and click on the Radio City Christmas Spectacular icon – then select their tickets.”
The Rockettes’ style of dance is a mixture of modern dance and classic ballet. Auditions are traditionally held in April in New York City. The dancers come from a variety of backgrounds, but all must stand between 5’ 6” and 5’ 10 1/2” to create what choreographer Linda Haberman calls a “pleasing effect”.
Women who audition must also show proficiency in several genres of dancing, primarily ballet, tap, modern, and jazz. Each year, 80 Rockettes are chosen for the Radio City production out of about 500 who try out. This is because the show needs 36 performers and four standbys who alternate playing the punishing schedule of four to five shows a day, six to seven days a week.
Presented in the vast 5,900-seat Radio City Music Hall in New York City, the annual musical stage show features over 140 performers, lavish sets and costumes, and an original musical score. And, each year, the traditional 90-minute revue combines singing, dancing and humor with traditional scenes in spectacular stage settings.
The first Christmas show was presented on December 21, 1932, and included the movies Flying Down to Rio and Walt Disney’s The Night Before Christmas. The show, which ran for two weeks, was created by the Music Hall's stage producer Leon Leonidoff and designer Vincente Minnelli. Part of the program included the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” choreographed by their founder, Russell Markert, and "The Living Nativity” – two scenes which have endured up to the present day.
In 2007, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Christmas show, an entirely new edition of the spectacular was updated, designed and choreographed under the direction of Linda Haberman. Over the years, she has helped hone the increasing strength and physicality of the Rockettes.
“These women train like crazy, they are all so strong and so tough and such good dancers – it's great," Haberman says.
The Rockettes perform annually at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (since 1957) and the America's Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit. The NBC Rockefeller Center Tree-Lighting Ceremony also traditionally includes a performance by the dance troupe.
