Rookies Sign with Falcons: 2013 Falcons Tickets Are Available Now at http://www.Flacons-Tickets.org, Powered by InsideTrackTickets.com
Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) July 25, 2013 -- On July 24, 2013, the Atlanta Falcons signed cornerback Desmond Trufant. Trufant was selected by the Falcons in the first round of the 2013 draft, at 22nd overall. The team traded third and sixth round picks for Trufant, which is a high risk. Standing at 6’0” and weighing in at 190 pounds, the cornerback started 47 of 50 career games at the University of Washington. He posted 195 tackles, established a school record of 39 passes deflected, and has six interceptions. As team captain in 2012, Trufant earned many honors, including second team All-American and first team All-Pac 12. In 2011 he was an All-Pac 12 conference honorable mention player, and he won the Don James perseverance award for starting all 13 games. He earned similar honors also as a freshman and sophomore on the team. While the Falcons front office and Trufant’s agent work out deals with money, Trufant will be on the turf battling it out for a starting position at right cornerback. He is up against Dominique Franks and Robert Alford during training camp for the spot opposite Asante Samuel.
The Falcons also signed this week quarterback Sean Renfree, one of their three seventh round picks. Renfree is 6’5’’ and 225 pounds and was selected 249th overall in the 2013 draft. He started 36 of 42 games at Duke University, where he completed 898 of 1,389 pass attempts for 9,456 yards. Renfree had 51 touchdowns within those yards and 40 interceptions. Although he has recently recovered from a shoulder surgery, he is expected to compete for backup quarterback behind Matt Ryan. He will be up against Dominique Davis and Seth Doege for the job. While the rookie was one of the best long term prospects in the draft, if he plays well, the Falcons might finally have their long term back up quarterback behind Ryan. He will probably never have to take the field in the upcoming season, but if he does, the Falcons will be plenty confident in his abilities.
