Rose State College to Host Transportation Institute for Youths in Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City, OK (PRWEB) July 02, 2013 -- The program at the Rose State College campus will provide participants with an opportunity to investigate careers and educational paths supporting today's transportation industry.
The Institute is sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and Rose State College, and funded through a grant from the Federal Highway Administration. The free program provides an active, day-long, lunch-included experiential opportunity for interested high school students to explore transportation careers and the complex transportation system upon which the country relies. Throughout the entire institute, students explore the many modes of transportation (air, water, highway, rail, transit), examine how the system is designed, built and maintained through field trips, interactive labs and activities presented by guest speakers on the subject of transportation.
Students will:
- Learn about planes, trains, ships, and automobiles through cool hands-on activities and group projects.
- Tour the Port of Catoosa with the U.S. Coast Guard and get behind-the-scenes information about the operations of Oklahoma’s inland port.
- Travel Kansas City, Missouri, to Johnson Community College's National Academy of Railway Science (NARS).
- Visit a highway construction site.
- Work with flight simulators at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Air National Guard.
- Spend time with other smart students in a vibrant college setting.
This year the students will receive a stipend of $100 upon completion of the institute. This program is a highly competitive scholarship program, which provides high school students with an opportunity to investigate careers and educational paths supporting today’s transportation industry. Space is limited. Students must fill out an application for consideration. Applications must be received by June 25 for consideration.
