Hot Lava is part of the “Recess Research” animation series that sets out to both entertain children and provide them with information about traditional playground games. Set in ancient Pompeii, the short tells an imaginary story about the origins of the game “Hot Lava.” It is available on YouTube on the RPR Youth channel.
The Recess Research series was developed as a result of the concerns over child fitness. The first short in the series, TAG, was inspired by a nine-year-old girl in Pennsylvania who was concerned about no longer being able to play tag at recess. The goal of the series is to provide a new short every month that teaches kids about a playground game and encourages them to be active, while also being entertaining in the tradition of children’s cartoons.
