Run the Exciting Fort Adams - Newport 10 Miler This Sunday April 17, One of the Most Beautiful Races in the Northeast
Newport, Rhode Island (PRWEB) April 24, 2014 -- The second annual Newport 10 Miler benefiting the Fort Adams Trust kicks off April 27, 2014. The event starts outside the east wall of National Historic Landmark Fort Adams. The course will prominently feature Newport’s scenic coastal views around the famed Ocean Drive and will pass many Bellevue Avenue mansions. The finish line will be truly unique as participants will enter the Fort through the north gate and finish on the parade field.
Matt Gray, President of Gray Matter Marketing and visionary behind the race notes, "This year we've added a 5k road race, starting and finishing in the same locations as the Newport 10 Miler! Now, runners of all levels can participate in this great event."
He continues, "Do you have a friend or family member that would like to compete, but can not run 10 miles? Now they can run or walk the 5k and meet you at the finish line festival. This race starts at 8:10 a.m. and runners have 40 minutes to complete the course. This race is limited to 250 participants."
"This is a spectacularly beautiful and exciting event," according to Rick Nagele, Executive Director, Fort Adams Trust. "First, the Fortress presents a dramatic backdrop to the start and finish. Watching the runners last year race through the gates, stretching themselves to reach the finish line, cheered on by hundreds of family members and friends yelling encouragement was just great."
"Add to this," continues Nagele, "scenery that is just perfect, as is the time of year. It's just getting green, and slightly warm, with thousands of daffodils planted by 'Daffidillion' bursting with color all throughout the course."
Launched in 2006 with the support of The Daffodil Project, an avid local beautification committee, 160,000 daffodils have been planted throughout Newport during the past 7 years. "You’ve probably seen their beautiful yellow blooms each April along Cliff Walk, at Easton’s Beach, at the Meeting House and on the J.T. Connell highway roundabout," says John Hirschboeck, a spokesperson for Daffodillion.
Over 20,000 bulbs were planted by the Daffodil Project for the October planting. Hirschboeck adds, "But your help is needed if we’re to reach our ultimate goal of 1,000,000 daffodils in Newport. That’s right – we want to become the daffiest city in America!"
Onsite registration will be held on Friday, April 25 at Sports Authority in Middletown from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 26 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. and Sunday (race morning) from 6:30 - 7:50 a.m. inside of Fort Adams. The race begins at 8:00 AM with a cannon salute from the walls of the fortress.
Parking is available at Fort Adams. Allow ample time on race morning to park and walk to the starting area, approximately half a mile from the designated parking areas. Please follow signs and the directions of the race volunteers on where to park.
