Sacred Heart University Launches New MSN Nursing Management and Leadership Specialization
Fairfield, CT (PRWEB) August 20, 2015 -- Sacred Heart University has made curriculum changes to the former Patient Care Services Administration track of the online Master of Science in Nursing program, effective fall of 2015. The curriculum modifications have been made to reflect current leadership trends and relevance in today’s ever-changing healthcare environment. These changes were necessary to ensure that Sacred Heart nursing students continue to receive the best possible education in preparation for their future.
The changes included renaming the Patient Care Services Administration specialization to Nursing Management & Executive Leadership, as well as updating appropriate courses in the curriculum. The new name and courses are reflective of today’s leadership roles in nursing and focus on current trends, national and global changes in health care and regulatory requirements.
Sacred Heart University's online MSN is a rigorous program designed to meet the needs of the working career nurse seeking superior clinical, administrative and educational skills. The program offers three specializations: Clinical Nurse Leader, Nursing Education, and Nursing Management & Executive Leadership (formerly Patient Care Services Administration).
Sacred Heart's Nursing Management & Executive Leadership (NMEL) specialization prepares nurses to move into a position of greater leadership, usually in an administrative setting of a health-care organization. Delivering quality patient health care is becoming more complex, and in this track students learn the evolving role competencies essential for today’s nursing leader.
“The nursing faculty is excited about the enhancements to the curriculum of the NMEL track,” says Dr. Linda Morrow, DNP, Assistant Program Director of the NMEL track. “We believe it will resonate with our nursing students, in and beyond the classroom as well as equip them with the knowledge and skills to become tomorrow’s nursing leaders.”
The curriculum requires the student to complete 120 clinical practicum hours locally, under the supervision of a preceptor. Throughout the coursework, students will acquire knowledge and skills in the subject areas of health-care delivery systems, information management, finance, ethics, human resources, strategic planning and transformational leadership, among others. Motivating others, creating a positive and professional work environment, building trust and facilitating influential communication are other skills that will be covered in the specialty courses.
College of Nursing
Sacred Heart University’s College of Nursing has been constantly growing and making necessary improvements for several years. This past July 2015, only a year after having become a School of Nursing, the school was elevated to a College of Nursing. The College of Nursing will have approximately 500 undergraduate and close to 900 graduate students, of which half are online. The College employs full-time online faculty members from all over the country, which is a unique trait for online programs and adds to the diversity of nursing experience taught in the virtual classroom.
