Sacred Heart University Names New School Of Nursing Director
Fairfield, CT (July 1, 2014) (PRWEB) July 31, 2014 -- The College of Health Professions at Sacred Heart University announced the appointment of Mary Alice Donius, EdD, RN, as the director of the School of Nursing, effective July 1, 2014.
Dr. Donius previously served as associate professor in the School of Nursing at the College of New Rochelle, where she was dean for seven years. Her prior experience includes a position as Director of Medical Center Education for Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, N.Y. “We are thrilled to have someone with Dr. Donius’ experience direct our School of Nursing,” said Dr. Patricia Walker, Dean of the College of Health Professions. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, and I have every confidence that she will continue our legacy of preparing top nurse leaders for a lifetime of success.”
A graduate of D’Youville College with a bachelor of science in nursing, Dr. Donius holds a master of education and doctor of education from Columbia University Teachers College, and a post-master’s certificate in holistic nursing from The College of New Rochelle. Her previous experience includes having a faculty practice at Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, N.Y., and clinician and educator positions in a variety of hospital settings and at the Columbia University School of Nursing, where she was director of the undergraduate program.
Dr. Donius’s research interests include the development of an attitude scale to measure caring as a three-dimensional construct of compassion, empathy and altruism; and the design and implementation of a Caring-Healing Nursing Practice Model intended to increase patient satisfaction and support nursing recruitment and retention.
School of Nursing
Sacred Heart University’s College of Health Professions has made improvements to the Department of Nursing for many years. The Department of Nursing was established 33 years ago and, in July 2013, it officially became its own school and opened with roughly 1,100 undergraduate and graduate nursing students, 29 full-time faculty members, and a support staff of 11.
Half of the nursing students are earning their degrees online, another area that has shown significant growth for the School of Nursing in recent years. All of SHU's nursing programs are accredited by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) .
