SAE International Publishes New Standard to Improve Efficiency of Aero Engine Supply Chain
WARRENDALE, Pa. (PRWEB) June 05, 2015 -- The SAE Technical Committee G22 - Aero Engine Supplier Quality (AESQ) Group today announced the publication the new standard “AS13003 – Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA).”
The purpose of this standard is to define the requirements for the approval of measurement and inspection systems used across the aero engine supply chain.
Formed in 2013, the AESQ membership includes engine manufacturers as well as major suppliers. Companies represented include GE, GKN, Honeywell, PCC, Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, and Snecma.
Its mission is to improve the quality capability of the Aero Engine Supply Chain and reduce costs through eliminating waste.
The group aims to harmonize its current supplier quality management requirements using the following key principles:
• Create simple, prescriptive, requirements
• Establish clear acceptance criteria
• Create a common language for quality
• Build on existing industry best practice, where it exists
The MSA standard adopts industry best practice including the AIAG Measurement Systems Analysis manual and describes the acceptance criteria that suppliers are expected to demonstrate.
Dr. Ian Riggs of Rolls-Royce led the development of the MSA standard. He commented, “As an industry we are heavily reliant on the use of inspection to assure ourselves that the product meets the design intent. The capability of our inspection systems is fundamental to the achievement of this goal. This standard will go a long way to improve the confidence in our verification activities across the supply chain.”
The standard is supported by existing industry wide training and consultancy provision.
The Engine Manufacturers will be communicating their specific deployment requirements to their suppliers over the coming months.
Suppliers who are part of the aero engine supply chain can get involved in the development of future requirements by contacting; Becky DeGutis, Technical Project Specialist, SAE International at +1-724-772-4083 or bdegutis(at)sae(dot)org.
