SAE International’s “A World in Motion” to Host Literacy Night for Metro Nashville Public Schools
WARRENDALE, Pa. (PRWEB) January 25, 2016 -- SAE International will host A World in Motion (AWIM) Literacy Night for Metro Nashville Public Schools on Thursday, January 28. The event, sponsored by Nissan, will take place at JE Moss Elementary School, 4701 Bowfield Dr., Antioch, Tenn., from 5:15-7:00 p.m.
Metro Nashville Public Schools serves a population of more than 13,000 students who have limited English proficiency. The afterschool Reading Club provides these students with an opportunity to have a second balanced literacy block. The Reading Club targets English learners that have been in a U.S. school less than two years and are struggling to learn the language.
To assist in this effort, AWIM will provide these students with the opportunity to engage in its Primary (K-3) program and corresponding books. During the month of January, students will participate in:
• Rolling Things;
• Engineering Inspired by Nature; or
• Straw Rockets.
The goal is to integrate AWIM’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) materials into the literacy program.
“This is a true win-win,” said Lori Gatmaitan, Director, SAE Foundation. “Anytime you can combine STEM education with a literacy program, everyone benefits. We salute both Nissan for their sponsorship of this worthy event and the Nashville Metro School District for their continuing efforts in teaching English to students striving to learn the language.”
During Literacy Night, students will participate in three rotations. The students will rotate through an interactive read aloud, presenting their work to other students and actively listening to other students to ask questions about their work. Each student attending Literacy Night will receive a copy of the text they will be reading throughout the unit of study.
“Nissan partnered with the SAE Foundation to create the books the students will read during Literacy Night. We are committed to supporting education, beginning with the youngest students,” said Vicki Smith, Senior Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility. “This program brings STEM concepts to life in the classroom, introducing subjects that may shape students’ interests for a lifetime.”
The partnership between Nissan and SAE started in 2007 when the corporation donated $1.5 million to develop an educational curriculum for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade. Upon completion of the literature-based curriculum, SAE International became the first organization to provide in-classroom STEM education for this younger group of students.
Most recently funded by a $125,000 grant from Nissan North America, the AWIM program for elementary-age students is being delivered in six counties and 21 schools across Middle Tennessee, including eight in Rutherford County. The program reached 2,000 students in Middle Tennessee, teaching them the problem solving and analytical skills they will need to be successful throughout their education and beyond.
