San Antonio Truck Accident Lawyer at Herrera Law Firm Comments about Plan to Lower Speed Limits in Texas Drilling Areas

“Between 2009 and 2013, statistics obtained by the Texas Department of Transportation indicate that fatal accidents involving trucks and other commercial vehicles have spiked more than 240 percent in drilling areas across south and west Texas,” said Herrera. “That’s why it’s so important to address speeding concerns on some of the area’s most dangerous roads. The time to act is now.”
According to the Texas Tribune, the change allows the TxDOT to decrease speed limits by up to 12 miles per hour on two-lane, two-way roads less than 24 feet wide and part of the state highway system. Due to increased traffic on such roads, the Texas Tribune reports that crash rates on rural roadways in drilling areas are up to three times higher than accident rates in non-drilling areas across the state.
The Texas Tribune article indicates that the TxDOT would enforce a number of speed limit reductions in the Eagle Ford Shale region. Statistics obtained by the Texas Tribune reveal a 247 percent change in fatal accidents involving commercial vehicles between 2009, when 15 deaths were reported, and 2013, when 52 were reported.
