Sandy Baker Art Collection Is Now at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
New York, New York (PRWEB) February 20, 2015 -- Jewelry designer Sandy Baker, one of the foremost names in American fine and fashion jewelry, has been invited to present her work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art to coincide with its exhibition "Represent: 200 years of African American Art". The exhibition has a total of 75 works by 50 artists including paintings, sculpture, photographs, drawings, prints, furniture, ceramics, silver and textiles. The exhibit runs until April 5, 2015. Signature pieces from Ms. Baker's collection on view include selections from her Art-To-Wear designs for the front and back of the ear. These convertibles are crafted so that their fronts remain stationary while their backs, "the jazz stems" as Baker calls them, are fluid mobiles. The fronts can be worn without their backs for a second look.
Ms. Baker's decades spanning career as a gold and silversmith has given her an inherent understanding of material and form. In the featured works, she takes a painterly direction with her color inlay designs which have curves, swirls and narrow slivers of rich organic materials. She combines non-traditional materials like mother-of-pearl, non-endangered red sponge coral, Jet, South Sea abalone and resin then artfully sets them in sterling silver.
When asked about her unique inlays Ms. Baker says, "I like expressing color in a fresh eclectic way. Her earring designs are modern clean lined mini-sculptures, many with kinetic movement. She says, "Each design is approached as a work of sculptural art luxuriating in the use of three dimensional space. The results are fluid bold pieces that are feminine without being frilly."
Ms. Baker's work was also included in the traveling exhibition of the American Jewelry Design Council's "Variations on a Theme: 25 years of Design from the AJDC", currently showing at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. The show highlights key points in the development of Baker's signature jewelry over her decades spanning career.
