SAU Hosts Discussion on Race, Power, & Unity with Dr. Christena Cleveland
Spring Arbor, Mich (PRWEB) October 23, 2015 -- On October 26, Dr. Christena Cleveland, associate professor of the practice of reconciliation and director of the center for reconciliation at Duke Divinity School, will present two lectures on the theme Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?: A Practical Theology of Race, Power, and Unity.
The lectures, which start at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Spring Arbor University’s Ralph Carey Forum, are based on Dr. Cleveland's book, Disunity in Christ: Uncovering the Hidden Forces that Keep Us Apart, and will explore the barriers that hinder deep and reconciling community in the contemporary church and in American society.
The discussions are part of Spring Arbor University’s 2015 Christian Spirituality Lecture Series, sponsored by the Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation and Leadership (MSFL) program. Dr. Eric Magnusson, director of the MSFL program, said, “Over the past few years, any idea that we live in a post-racial society has been shattered. The tragic events in cities like Ferguson and Charleston are an invitation for the church to reimagine how we can participate in the gospel work of racial reconciliation. We are incredibly blessed to have Dr. Cleveland unsettle, challenge and inspire us through this year's lectures.”
Dr. Cleveland is a multi-award winning social psychologist whose passion is overcoming cultural divisions in groups. Christianity Today recognized her as one of the “33 under 33” millennial Christian leaders and JET magazine said she was one of five “online shepherds to follow.”
Her first book, Disunity in Christ, won a 2013 Leadership Journal award. She is still writing her second book, The Priesthood of the Privileged, which looks at power and inequality in the church.
All are welcome to attend the lectures.
