Save Family Photos Launches Family History Website to Preserve Old Photos
New York, NY (PRWEB) February 18, 2015 -- Save Family Photos, the popular Instagram feed featuring vintage family photos, today released a new family history website. The site serves as a resource for families who want to preserve analog photos and enrich their family tree. Featured blog posts include instructions for preserving family photos, tips for solving photographic mysteries and ways to make #throwbackthursday meaningful for families.
The founder of Save Family Photos believes family photos are in danger. Every family has hundreds of disorganized analog photos deteriorating in their homes. These photos hold valuable memories and are highly susceptible to damage and loss. To historians, family photos exist on the margins of global history — they aren't considered "newsworthy" enough to be catalogued in the National Archives. Yet for families, photos are visible accounts of personal history.
"Old family photos are priceless, but without the stories that add context to them, their value is diminished. Most of these stories live inside individuals' memories — when they die, the stories die with them. We must share our stories or our family photos will end up as anonymous artifacts in thrift stores, along with the countless others," said Rachel LaCour Niesen, co-founder and CEO, Save Family Photos.
Save Family Photos was founded by Rachel LaCour-Niesen. After LaCour-Niesen's grandfather died in 2014, she wanted to celebrate the legacy he left behind. So she started scanning old photos of him. Then, she posted photos and stories about him on Instagram and invited family and friends to do the same for their loved ones. In turn, they encouraged people in their networks to share. Now LaCour-Niesen receives thousands of photos from around the world.
"My grandparents were the inspiration for Save Family Photos. I'm lucky to have matriarchs and patriarchs who love telling stories. My grandmother has a large, wood-paneled wall of family photos. In that wall, I saw faces full of hopes and dreams before I ever existed. That's when I realized, my story started before me," said LaCour-Niesen.
Save Family Photos started as a personal project on Instagram and quickly grew into a virtual campfire. It's a safe place where people can gather and share their stories, one photo at a time.
