Save Ukraine Now Focuses on Children to Alleviate Humanitarian Crisis
Tucker, GA (PRWEB) January 27, 2015 -- Save Ukraine Now (http://www.saveukrainenow.org), a charitable organization formed to alleviate Ukraine’s exploding humanitarian crisis, today announced a new focus on the youth of Ukraine, a demographic being hit particularly hard by the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
UNICEF estimates 1.7 million children have been affected by the conflict, and 10,000 of those have already been consigned to state care. Moreover, most of the displaced children are struggling to find food or have already been stricken by diseases fostered by poor hygiene and sanitation. Save Ukraine Now (SUN) kicked off its youth campaign last month by giving Christmas presents to more than 1,500 of these suffering children.
Tamara Zykova, International Outreach Director of Save Ukraine Now, said, “Just to see the smiling face of a child, with sparkling eyes full of hope for the future, was the best reward anyone could ever ask for. I think SUN should bring as much warmth and light to the children of Ukraine as the real sun provides to the planet Earth.”
SUN staff gave presents to children who had lost their parents, consisting of a chocolate bar, a special honey cake and a Christmas card from Ukraine’s St. Nicholas. The gifts were donated by SUN and its supporters, and were given to the children at special ceremonies at the Column Hall of the Kiev City Administration on December 19th and 20th.
Celebrities, government officials, members of the diplomatic community and members of local relief organizations attended the events. Renowned Italian singer, Gianni Davis, entertained the participants as a special guest of SUN.
Perhaps even more important, in light of the number of children affected by the conflict and the success of its Christmas event, SUN is expanding its outreach to the youth of Ukraine. It seeks additional support from youth-based organizations and will publicize the plight of Ukraine’s youth in its educational campaign aimed at U.S. decision-makers and the general public.
Dr. Gary Kellner, President of Save Ukraine Now, concluded, “SUN’s initial outreach to the children of Ukraine was a great success; but for all we accomplished, the 1,500 children we helped at Christmas represent a tiny proportion of the number of children suffering. We must do more.”
