SC Auto Accident Lawyer Comments on Thanksgiving Traffic Tribulations
Columbia, SC (PRWEB) November 26, 2013 -- Bert Louthian, a car accident lawyer based in Columbia, warned today that South Carolina families driving to visit relatives over the Thanksgiving holiday should exercise extra caution and allow sufficient time to reach their destination safely.
“The number of cars on the road increases significantly during the period from November 27 through December 1,” Louthian said, citing a November 20, 2013, news release from the American Automobile Association (AAA) which estimates that 38.9 million people will travel by automobile over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
On November 19, the National Safety Council (NSC) released its estimates of holiday traffic fatalities, projecting that 436 traffic fatalities and another 46,600 injuries requiring medical treatment are likely to occur in motor vehicle collisions during this busy holiday time. “We know that some of these accidents are going to happen on South Carolina highways,” Louthian said. “Last year, the South Carolina Highway Patrol reported eight deaths from car crashes in our state over the Thanksgiving holiday, according to news accounts at the time. We certainly hope that drivers will exercise safe driving practices this year and that the 2013 statistics will be lower.”
Louthian urged those traveling by car to increase their chances of safe arrival at the Thanksgiving feast by doing the following: (1) always wearing a seatbelt, even when traveling a short distance; (2) making sure children are safely buckled into an appropriately sized car seat; and (3) ascertaining that everyone in the vehicle has fastened their seatbelt, especially after a rest stop when they may forget to rebuckle. According to the NSC, as many as 158 lives could be saved this Thanksgiving if everyone remembers to buckle up, Louthian said.
