School for Learning Disabilities, Cumberland Academy of Georgia, Sent Students to a Special Visit With a Tommy Nobis Employee
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) December 17, 2013 -- Cumberland Academy of Georgia is a special needs school for high functioning Autism, Asperger’s, ADD, ADHD, and other learning disorders. As part of the challenging curriculum, high school aged students are exposed to a wide variety of career paths. Students are encouraged to create choices for their next step after high school. Cumberland developed a class to aid students in choosing appropriate colleges and exploring different career paths. Students meet daily to work on college applications as well as researching possible positions within appropriate organizations.
This week, students were exposed to an innovative program from the Tommy Nobis Center. An Atlanta car dealership has employed workers with special needs from the Tommy Nobis Center. Cumberland students spent a morning watching and learning from an employee with special needs. Cumberland students learned about running a business. Specifically, students learned how to run the Café Blends business at a local car dealership. Students also received information about becoming a positive presence in the workplace, communicating effectively with supervisors and important employee tools such as commuting and promptness. All of these tips were communicated to the students by an employee with similar special needs and skills sets.
“The career environment was so inspiring to our students,” said Debbi Scarborough, Founding Director of Cumberland Academy of Georgia. “The employee from the Tommy Nobis Center was clearly a rising star in the company and motivated the students to work hard to achieve their dreams.”
