School Lunch Fairy Receives Their First Donations
West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) April 21, 2017 -- A group of high school juniors from Florida have come together to raise money for unpaid school lunch balances. These admirable teenagers want to make a dent in the unpaid accounts so more children can enjoy a hot nutritious lunch every day. Founder Christian Cordon-Cano, a junior at The King´s Academy in West Palm Beach, says, "We want to help students from kindergarten to 12th grade receive a decent lunch every day and by paying off their balances we will be able to do just that."
Although the government is doing its best to address the problem of hungry kids in school, the current system does not cover all situations. The National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946, provides free or reduced cost lunches to children of families who qualify for this level of government help. These students who are not in the free lunch program or simply do not have the money to pay for lunch are given an insufficient cold meal or not allowed a school lunch until their balance is paid. Thankfully, Christian and School Lunch Fairy are putting their efforts into reducing these balances and getting kids the meals they need to thrive in school.
Inspired by the success in crowd-funding sights, the group set up a donation site for their School Lunch Fairy program so people around the world could support the South Florida cause. The site has been a great platform, and they have already raised over $3,500. The teens set a goal amount of $5,000, and they are over halfway there.
Here is what some donors had to say:
• "It is very inspiring to see two high school students taking on the cause to help students be able to pay for school lunch. Keep up the important work to improve our communities!" - Anonymous donor
• "No child should EVER go hungry. EVER!" -Nick Jiwa, donor
• "Making sure that our children get a good meal at school is a worthy cause." -Edward Gallagher, donor
A study conducted by the School Nutrition Association discovered that about 75% of the districts surveyed had unpaid lunch balances at the end of the school year. Until the government makes a big commitment to feeding kids in school it's up to generous donors and inspirational young leaders like Christian to make up for this lack of funds.
Every donation helps, no matter how small, and every donation to the School Lunch Fairy program goes to this worthy cause. Please visit the donation page to give and share the link to help Christian and his friends reach their goal and get one step closer to their dream of ensuring every child has access to a proper school lunch.
