School of PE Prepares for NCEES Exam Changes
DUBLIN, Ohio (PRWEB) January 10, 2018 -- The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying® (NCEES) recently announced that several engineering licensure examinations are changing this year. The changes that were announced affect the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Chemical, PE Electrical, PE Environmental, Structural Engineering (SE) Lateral and SE Vertical exams.
School of PE has been preparing its review courses to cater to the 2018 exam changes. School of PE provides Fundamentals of Engineering (FE), PE, SE and surveying exam review courses.
“We always try to prepare for the exam changes as early as we can by looking at the syllabus each session to see what the exam specifications are,” said Chris Miller, School of PE’s program director. “If we notice any changes in the examinations, we will coordinate with our instructors to refine their materials in order to cater our classes to the new exam specifications.”
According to NCEES, the PE Chemical exam will now only be offered as a computer-based testing (CBT) exam; this exam was previously offered in the traditional pencil-and-paper format. The exam specifications, which outline the topics covered on each exam, were updated for the PE Electrical, PE Environmental, SE Lateral and SE Vertical exams.
Of all the exam changes 2018 brings, the change to the CBT format for the PE Chemical exam is the most significant change. Prior to 2018, the exam was offered twice a year in April and October. Now that the exam is offered via the CBT format, examinees are able to take the exam any time during the year at an approved testing center.
According to Miller, the FE exams were converted to the CBT format a few years ago, which gave School of PE some time to develop a strategy on how to adapt to and prepare for the PE exams converting to CBT format.
“When this happens, we put our courses for those exams on a quarter-based system, so that way, we can assist people who are taking CBT exams throughout the year,” Miller said.
Once the PE Chemical exam was converted to the CBT format, NCEES released a PE Chemical Reference Handbook, which is now the only reference material examinees can use during the PE Chemical exam.
School of PE instructors have been revamping their notes to correspond with the new handbook.
John Lewyta, a PE Chemical instructor for School of PE, has greatly focused on the PE Chemical Reference Handbook while rewriting his notes for School of PE’s upcoming review course.
According to Lewyta, the PE Chemical Reference Handbook is “more focused for studying for the exam and eliminates extraneous material that is found in textbooks but won't be tested on the exam.”
As a result, Lewyta is using the handbook as the outline for his class notes to better prepare students for the exam.
