The novel chronicles the lives of two scientists, once lovers, now enemies, whose shared invention was used to catastrophic ends and the war they’ve waged against one another for hundreds of years.
One of the scientists, Mere Roosevelt, discovers that he is a clone and to survive he may have to turn into the person he hates most, a mass murderer who almost destroyed the world by setting off a race war. The other scientist, Mona Teller, becomes ruthless in her quest to try to make amends for her invention, an organic computer capable of recreating any substance, even humans.
