Science Club for Girls (SCFG) Announces 2014 CATALYST Award Honorees, Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Cambridge, MA (PRWEB) October 16, 2014 -- The Science Club for Girls will honor CATALYST Award recipients Luba Greenwood, Oneeka Williams, M.D., and Carolyn Green for their work promoting diversity and inclusion in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) at the Boston Marriott Newton on Monday, October 27.
“The Science Club for Girls Catalyst Awards recognize individuals committed to making STEM a truly universal enterprise,” says Uche Amaechi, chair of the SCFG Board. “We are proud to celebrate the strategic efforts and achievements of this year’s honorees to open doors for women and girls to enter and remain in STEM careers.”
About the CATALYST Honorees
Luba Greenwood -- Luba Greenwood is an advocate for women-led companies and women on company boards. She has been a mentor for women entrepreneurs in the high technology and science space, from start-up to early-stage companies, including the Saathipads Project / http://saathipads.com/, which is an organization that manufactures and distributes pads for girls in rural India. She is also an adjunct professor at Boston University School of Management on Business Law and Boston University Law School on the Life Sciences. She has also used her law experience to educate Russian authorities about domestic violence and the laws and procedures that should be put in place. Oneeka Williams, M.D. -- Dr. Williams is a distinguished Urologic Surgeon at St Elizabeth’s Medical Center and Assistant Clinical Professor of Urology at Tufts Medical School. She is a tireless mentor to girls and students, a dedicated leader in multiple community organizations, an innovator and visionary who also shares her passion and knowledge by speaking frequently to both children and adults on STEM, literacy and health related topics. Dr. Williams has combined her love of science, medicine and public health with her love of writing. Her series of children’s books featuring “Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo – Super Surgeon on the Go” has gone out to children and educators across the country and various parts of the world. Carolyn Green – Carolyn is a serial entrepreneur creating exceptional companies dedicated to the development of new medicines. Prior to serving as CEO of Atreaon, Inc., Carolyn co-founded Logical Therapeutics Inc. a biopharmaceutical company developing novel anti-inflammatory medicines. Before coming to Boston, Carolyn was the founding Director of a translational research and commercialization center at the University of Pittsburgh. Carolyn mentors inventing scientists and early stage companies through the Wallace H. Coulter Translational Research Partnership Program and through the Carnegie Mellon University – University of Pittsburgh Joint Healthcare Advisory Committee. She has also coached and judged numerous business competitions for organizations like Springboard, the National Collegiate Innovators and Inventors Alliance and MALSI. About SCFG 20th Anniversary
Since its founding in 2004, 92% of high school juniors and seniors who have participated in Science Club for Girls programs have gone on to college. 55% of the SCFG alumnae have majored in science, engineering, or allied health. By comparison, only 22.5% of MA high school seniors who take the SAT intend to study STEM in college. 47% of alumnae said SCFG was their primary introduction to STEM careers and 40% said SCFG was a strong influence in their decision to take more challenging science or math courses in high school.*
