Scott Hannaman, D.D.S. and Edward Hebert, D.D.S. Tout the Merits of Modern Technology in Dentistry
Lake Charles, LA (PRWEB) October 11, 2017 -- In light of National Dental Hygiene Month in October, Dr. Scott Hannaman and Dr. Edward Hebert discuss the benefits of modern technology in the dental industry. One of the crowning achievements in the dental industry is Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC), perhaps the most researched and supported dental technology today, which enables same-day dental restorations.
“CEREC eliminates the need for multiple visits, impression materials that often make people gag or uncomfortable, temporary crowns that sometime come off while waiting for the lab-fabricated crown and errors in the transfer to the lab and back,” said Dr. Hannaman. “With CEREC, dentists can copy the height, width and shape of the tooth prior to beginning the procedure with a digital camera ‘wand’ to make the bite exactly how it was before, so there’s no guessing if it’s going to fit flush and comfortable.”
Added Dr. Hebert, “The images are stitched together and a 3D representation of your tooth, adjacent teeth and bite appear on the computer screen within moments of the digital impression. Shades are available to match the other teeth that are almost imperceptible to anyone other than a dental professional.”
The doctors then design a tooth using algorithms of the adjacent teeth’s shape and angles, along with a digital “library” of teeth. “We keep the digital files stored, so if something happens to your tooth we can quickly reprint the crown for a patient,” noted Dr. Hannaman.
Another innovation is digital radiographs. “Digital is easy to show on large screen computer monitors for diagnosis and patient education,” said Dr. Hebert, “and provides immediate images, instead of waiting on team members to process film.”
Images can be magnified on a high-resolution monitor and enhanced to provide clarification of a cavity, fracture or infection, and are easily and securely stored in a HIPAA-friendly environment. “Most importantly, it has a lower radiation dose than traditional film X-rays and provides a safer acquisition of diagnostic information,” added Dr. Hannaman.
Lastly, there have been great strides in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and panoramic imaging – 3D images of one’s teeth, surrounding bone, nerves, sinuses and surrounding anatomical structures. This information aids in diagnosing infections, cracked teeth or pathological findings such as oral cancer.
“The images can also be used to merge with computer models of your teeth to plan for implants, mouth guards, snoring devices and other digitally founded prosthesis,” concluded Dr. Hebert. “The CT allows for a highly accurate distance calculation to aid in root canals by knowing the exact length of a root, or for planning implants with a surgical representation of the width, length and angle to place the implant safely.”
The dental industry continues to evolve, and Dr. Hannaman and Dr. Hebert will continue implementing advancements in the office. Dr. Hannaman is now using 3D printing by using the digital intraoral images taken in the office.
