Scottish Architectural Student Wins 1st Place in Pittsburgh Art Contest

Hugh Ebdy, a 21 year old student studying architecture in the small Scottish city of Dundee has taken 1st Place in an imaginative art contest, the goal of which is to inspire new stories in Science Fiction and Fantasy Fiction.
Hugh’s work “Apocalypse Book,” was chosen by a panel of judges from among 185 entries, many of which were local, but with submissions coming from as far afield as Bulgaria and the Chez Republic. A highly detailed apocalyptic cityscape, a skyscraper climbing dragon, and a simple red umbrella were key elements setting Hugh’s work apart.
The Contest
Pittsburgh area web writer Scot Noel teamed with New York Times bestselling author Jane Lindskold to sponsor an art contest for aspiring amateurs in the fields of Science Fiction and Fantasy Fiction. The contest ran from February through May 31st with judging and popular prize voting completed on June 15th.
At stake was a First Place award of $400, with Second Place and Popular Choice prizes of $100 each. Rafael Gonzalez of Connecticut took second place with a piece entitled “Spell of Flight,” and Melvin Costaniano’s comic inspired “Angel’s Blood” won the popular vote.
Stories Will be Written
Cash prizes are only the start. New York Times bestselling author Jane Lindskold, whose most recent work, Artemis Awakening, is on bookshelves now, will select one of the three winners to inspire a new work of science or fantasy fiction.
