Seattle Home Addition by Remodeler Hammer & Hand Brings Energy Efficiency and Quality Design Together
Seattle, WA (PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- Seattle remodeler Hammer & Hand announced today the unveiling of their energy efficient home addition project in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. The collaboration between Seattle firm Heliotrope Architects and Hammer & Hand enables the homeowners to push the envelope in energy efficiency.
Before construction started on the home addition, the Hammer & Hand remodeling team raised the original 100-year-old, 500 SF home four feet on stilts to accommodate the new foundation. The remodel removes earlier additions, reuses materials and restores the vernacular of the original structure.
“The house was originally about 350 square feet and then was added on to make to make it about 500 square feet,” said Hammer & Hand Seattle project lead Dan Whitmore. “It was added on again very haphazardly so we’re taking it back and saving a lot of nice character from the original structure.”
The home addition also incorporates high efficiency building features such as Passive House certified windows from Ireland, advanced framed walls, and a coating of FastFlash, a breathable waterproof membrane to protect the exterior.
Through the collaboration between homeowners, Heliotrope Architects, and Hammer & Hand, the home addition combines high performance building with modern design.
“In the US, a really green house is hippie-ugly, and a modern home usually leaks and costs a fortune in energy,” said Herrin. “These clients called because they were deeply interested in the confluence of design and sustainability.”
