Senior MSP cites Post Polio Syndrome awareness as “unacceptable”
(PRWEB UK) 7 November 2017 -- PPS Day aims to raise the profile of the 120,000 people in the UK living with PPS; a debilitating neurological condition for which there is no cure. From the inaugural PPS day in Winchester in 2013, the event has grown in importance over the years to receive national recognition, with events now held in all the major political capitals of the UK – Westminster; The Welsh Assembly; Stormont; and now Holyrood.
“It was a pleasure to sponsor this year’s PPS event at Holyrood, with the main aim of the day to increase awareness of, and knowledge about Post Polio Syndrome,” said Alex Neil MSP. “Despite over 6,000 people in Scotland living with PPS, not enough people know about the aftermath of Polio, or know that the condition exists. It is unacceptable given the numbers that so few people, even in the medical profession, are aware of this condition and this has to change. Sadly, we do not hear about PPS and therefore I think we have quite job to do to make more people aware of the disorder and its symptoms.”
“I was absolutely delighted Alex Neil MSP agreed to act as sponsor of this year’s PPS Day at Holyrood. His passionate and well informed speech on the day made it clear that we are finally making headway in the fight to raise awareness of PPS in all corners of Britain,” said CEO of The British Polio Fellowship, Ted Hill MBE. “Mr Neil has demonstrated a great understanding of the problem and a desire to help us further in our quest to better support those with PPS in Scotland, and across the whole of Britain,” said Ted. “It is only with the support of politicians, the heath community and the media that we can hope to close the gap between awareness of PPS and other better known conditions affecting similar numbers of people. So, thanks again to Alex, and to all at Holyrood and Edinburgh, for the warmest of welcomes on PPS Day,” Ted concluded.
