Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation and STAR Center’s Founder, Dr. Lucy Jane Miller, Receives Denver Business Journal’s Outstanding Women in Business Award
Denver, CO (PRWEB) August 21, 2013 -- The Denver Business Journal annually recognizes Denver’s most influential women of excellence in business and the community. This year, the Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) Foundation and STAR (Sensory Therapies And Research) Center’s founder, Lucy Jane Miller, PhD, OTR, received the prestigious Outstanding Women in Business award in the healthcare category.
“I am so honored and humbled to have received such a prestigious award amongst all of the other deserving nominees,” said Dr. Miller. “My biggest desire in receiving this award is that it brings more recognition to Sensory Processing Disorder in hopes that someday, every child with SPD is identified and treated by age 6.”
Dr. Miller is conducting groundbreaking research and treatment into an extremely prevalent, but previously unrecognized, neurological disorder called Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). As founder of the first comprehensive SPD research and treatment program nationwide Dr. Miller has been investigating, analyzing, and stimulating other scientists to participate in collaborative research for almost 40 years. She is the author of two groundbreaking books, Sensational Kids and No Longer A SECRET, which have propelled international recognition, stimulating the Denver area to become the epicenter of SPD research, education and treatment.
Dr. Miller has developed nine nationally standardized tests for use worldwide to assess and diagnose SPD and other developmental disorders and delays. She introduced her latest assessment, GOAL: Goal Oriented Assessment of Lifeskills, at the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Annual Conference & Expo in San Diego in April, 2013. Studies by Miller and her colleagues have brought SPD widespread recognition while improving countless lives. She is responsible for developing and teaching a remarkable new intensive treatment model for children with SPD, delivering quicker results.
The innovative treatment model implemented at the STAR Center for treatment of SPD, the gains in knowledge about and awareness of SPD, and the accreditation of SPD as a valid diagnosis will be among Miller’s lasting legacies.
