Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation Announces First Child’s Completion of Brain Waves Pilot Study
Denver, CO (PRWEB) February 26, 2016 -- The Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation announces that the first of six subjects has completed the Foundation’s current pilot study. In this study researchers are looking for neurophysiological changes in children with SPD after receiving the STAR Treatment Approach. All six subjects chosen for the study will be male between the ages of 8 years and 12 years with SPD. Each subject receives neurophysiological testing at the University of California San Francisco before and after being treated with the STAR Treatment Approach at STAR Center in Greenwood Village, Colorado.
Dr. Elysa Marco of UCSF is the principal investigator with co principal investigators Dr. Lucy Jane Miller of STAR Center and Dr. Sarah Schoen of SPD Foundation. The project is being funded by a grant from The Wallace Research Foundation.
The purpose of this pilot study is to build on the ground-breaking work of Dr. Elysa Marco and colleagues of UCSF suggesting that children with SPD have brain-based functional imaging differences that can be measured. Dr. Marco’s previous research shows structural differences in the white matter of children with SPD. Based on the preliminary work done at UCSF, researchers hypothesize that children who show atypical connectivity in four neural networks will also show statistically significant brain changes following the completion of intensive therapy using the STAR Treatment Approach.
“This is the first study looking at an objective measure of neurophysiological change to support the underlying theory of sensory integration treatment,” says Dr. Sarah Schoen of SPD Foundation. The STAR Treatment Approach is a short-term intensive therapy program for children with SPD. Participants in the STAR Treatment Approach are treated in approximately 30 sessions total with four to five sessions per week. The first client to complete the pilot study participated in a 30-session program, which included occupational therapy, parent education and family services support.
