Sepsis Alliance Announces Addition of Scott Alling to Board of Directors
San Diego, California (PRWEB) December 18, 2013 -- Sepsis Alliance, the nation's leading patient advocacy organization promoting sepsis awareness, today announced the appointment of Scott Alling to its Board of Directors.
Alling, an active member of several volunteer organizations, is the founder and CEO of various companies in the food and beverage industry. Among other positions, he is former executive vice president and senior partner of a large privately owned engineering and construction firms, and he has helped launch and finance several successful businesses including a chain of New Jersey Day Care/Child Development Centers. Alling is also active in ground level local New York City politics and is an appointed member of Manhattan Community Board 5.
“Sepsis Alliance is dedicated to raising awareness of a largely unknown yet extremely lethal condition that could occur from a growing number of conditions of disease, infection and trauma. If left undetected for even a short time, it can be extremely lethal as evidenced in the many tragedies and alarming studies,” Alling said. “Joining the Sepsis Alliance Board will allow me to help with their vital mission.”
Sepsis, sometimes called blood poisoning by the general public, is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to infection injures its own tissues and organs. Annually, sepsis kills 258,000 people in the United States alone and is a medical emergency that requires early diagnosis and rapid treatment with antibiotics and fluids. When treated correctly, severe sepsis or septic shock is almost always preventable
Sepsis is the most expensive of all in-hospital costs at $20.3 billion dollars in 2011 – 5.2% of the national costs for all hospitalizations that year. Sepsis is also the most expensive condition billed to Medicare, accounting for 6.9% of all 2011 Medicare costs. Despite these numbers, fewer than half of American adults know what sepsis is.
