Serious Eye Conditions Linked to Prolonged Exposure to UV Sun Rays Year-Round
Carlsbad, CA (PRWEB) August 26, 2015 -- A July 14, 2015 Boston Magazine article entitled “See the Light: Protecting Your Eyes from the Sun” discusses the importance of protecting the eyes from UV rays. Every summer, the public is reminded to wear sunscreen when spending a day at the beach or out and about enjoying the warmer weather. But, while it is essential to wear sunblock during prolonged periods of sun exposure, many often forget the importance of shielding one's eyes from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Founder of Carlsbad Eye Care, ophthalmologist Dr. Michael Tracy comments on the necessity of protecting the eyes from the sun.
“Fortunately, many people are aware that sunblock is important for preventing skin cancer and other skin conditions,” said Dr. Michael Tracy. “However, fewer people are aware that they should be taking special precautions to protect their eyes from the sun as well. Fortunately, most sunglasses sold these days do an excellent job in blocking ultraviolet rays.”
It is also important to choose a pair of sunglasses that has a uniform, dark tint that sufficiently blocks harmful light. If you look in the mirror and you can clearly see your eyes, the lenses may not be dark enough. Wearing dark sunglasses will help protect the eyes from exposure to blue light, which can cause cataracts.
“Sunglasses aren't just important in the summer,” added Dr. Tracy. “Throughout the year, and even on cloudy days, lengthy exposure to ultraviolet rays can contribute to various eye and eyelid conditions.”
“As our patients get older, especially over the age of 40, we suggest yearly eye exams,” said Dr. Tracy. “If we see our patients at least once a year, we can identify certain conditions or issues that may not even present with symptoms, such as glaucoma or cataracts, before they become more serious. The earlier we can identify these issues, the better our chances of treating the condition.”
Dr. Michael Tracy is a board-certified ophthalmologist in Carlsbad, CA. He completed his residency training in ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania and his fellowship in Corneal and Refractive Surgery at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
