“Open source is the right way to build cloud, and OpenStack is the best way to make open source cloud a reality,” said Jesse Proudman, founder and CTO of Blue Box. “We’re deeply committed to the OpenStack community as contributors on a variety of levels. These seven sessions are a humbling reflection of the value our fellow Stackers place in our ability to contribute to making the software better.”
1. Docker Docker Docker OpenStack
Tuesday, May 19 at 3:40 p.m.
Featuring Paul Czarkowski
Openstack provides a plethora of ways to run Docker. This talk describes different ways to run Docker on Openstack (or Openstack on Docker if you're truly crazy), including operational tooling to help with tracking running containers, collecting metrics and herding logs and running your own private registry.
2. Using Rally for OpenStack certification at Scale!
Tuesday, May 19 at 3:40 p.m.
Featuring Jesse Keating
This session focuses on the Rally automation framework to test OpenStack clouds before moving to scale-out production, including performing load testing, generating execution data for examination and historical comparison, measuring workload performance and failure rates against established SLAs, and visualizing results graphically.
3. Mad Stacks: Beyond Thunderdome
Tuesday, May 19 at 4:40 p.m.
Featuring Jesse Proudman
This full-house session from the Paris Summit is reloaded for Vancouver. But this time, panelists will have to fight to survive, and guest judges chosen from the audience by analyst and cloud expert Caroline McCrory will decide who wins. In this panel, experts who have deployed OpenStack in each of five methodologies — services, appliances, distros, DIY and consulting — will engage in a debate, each making their cases for the best OpenStack deployment model. It’s equal parts honest critique, practical advice and tweet-worthy entertainment.
4. Hold my beer and watch this! Upgrading from Havana to Juno in one fell swoop with live customers.
Tuesday, May 19 at 4:40 p.m.
Featuring Jesse Keating
Upgrading OpenStack from Havana to Juno can be challenging. In this session, Blue Box engineer and OpenStack warrior Jesse Keating will show how his team did it—in a production environment with customer deployments on the line.
5. Ask the Experts: Are Containers a Threat to OpenStack?
Wednesday, May 20 at 9:00 a.m.
Featuring Jesse Proudman
This debate session examines whether or not containers are a threat to OpenStack and will be featured on the "Speaking in Tech" Podcast, distributed by The Register. Topics include:
- Can containers replace OpenStack in the enterprise?
- Where do Kubernetes and Mesos compete and where are they complementary?
- What role does Docker have in OpenStack?
- Is it practical to use a combination of Kubernetes and Docker to completely replace OpenStack and KVM?
This all-star panel also features Jan Mark Holzer of Red Hat, Kenneth Hui of EMC, Caroline McCrory, Manju Ramanathpura of HDS, Boris Renski of Mirantis, and Greg Knieriemen of HDS.
6. The Entrepreneur’s Challenge: The Realities of Starting an OpenStack Company
Wednesday, May 20 at 4:30 p.m.
Featuring Jesse Proudman
In this panel, Simon Anderson, CEO of Dreamhost and co-founder of Inktank Storage, will lead a panel discussion with founders of a group of OpenStack companies, including Tesora, Piston Cloud Computing, Blue Box, and SwiftStack. They will explore the challenges of founding a company and provide advice to prospective entrepreneurs in the OpenStack ecosystem.
7. What Your Customers Don’t Know About OpenStack Might Hurt You
Thursday, May 21 at 11:50 a.m.
Featuring Jesse Proudman
OpenStack is complicated, and explaining it to app developers and other consumers of the services it delivers can be a tough, thankless and often counterproductive task. But if you don’t cover the basics, small misunderstandings can bloom into major headaches as you move to production. In this session, we’ll discuss five major tripwires that can put the best-laid deployments flat on their faces. These lessons from the trenches will be presented by five people who design, deploy, operate and consult on OpenStack with demanding customers.
