Shady Grove Fertility’s 2014 Fresh IVF Program Shows 6% Fewer Babies Were Born Prematurely or Very Prematurely Compared to the National Average
Rockville, MD (PRWEB) August 29, 2016 -- Shady Grove Fertility’s 2014 fresh in vitro fertilization (IVF) Program showed that responsible treatment leads to more full-term deliveries, with their fresh IVF program exceeding the national average of 77 percent being full-term pregnancies, compared with 83 percent of SGF pregnancies being full-term, according to the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART).
For women in the younger than 35 age group, Shady Grove Fertility’s fresh IVF program resulted in more than 6 percent fewer premature or very premature deliveries when compared to the national average in this same age group.
SART, whose mission it is to establish and maintain quality standards for assisted reproductive technology (ART), represents more than 90 percent of ART centers in the U.S. and requires of its centers annual IVF birth outcome reporting so that patients can make more informed decisions about their infertility care. In their 2014 National Data Summary, SART culled data from 375 affiliated fertility centers.
While there are many factors that can impact the timing of delivery, one of the most common is the occurrence of multiples. When undergoing IVF treatment, twins and triplets are generally due to transferring multiple embryos.
One of the primary factors that decreased premature delivery in women who achieved pregnancy after a fresh IVF cycle was the use of selective embryo transfer (eSET), of which Shady Grove Fertility is a pioneer and a strong proponent. In 2014, with 83 percent of all pregnant patients in the SGF IVF Program undergoing a fresh cycle having a singleton pregnancy, this lead to the twin rate falling from 20 percent to 16 percent and the triplet rate remaining at less than 1 percent. More than half (51%) of the fresh IVF cycles at Shady Grove Fertility in 2014 utilized eSET, which involves transferring one high quality embryo, compared to the national average, at 32%. eSET leads to more full-term, healthier pregnancies and fewer cases of multiples, which pose risks to the mother and babies.
