Sharon Kleyne & Dr. Marci Ballman Discuss Lung Health Awareness
Grants Pass, OR (PRWEB) October 10, 2017 -- Date aired: September 11th, 2017
Guests: Marcy Ballman, Ph. D., Montana Health Services Manager, American Lung Association, http://www.lung.org
Marci Ballman, Ph.D. explained on the nationally syndicated The Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water, Global Climate Change and Your Health on VoiceAmerica sponsored by Nature’s Tears® EyeMist®, that “the lungs offer exchange interface between our environment (the atmosphere) and the body”? Oxygen is distributed throughout the body through the blood after it is sent out by the lungs to do so.
Kleyne welcomed Ballman to the program to talk about the lungs, lung education and lung health. Ball shared that she earned her Ph.D. at the University of Montana where she studied toxicology, neuroscience, brain toxicology and the respiratory system. She was especially active studying children with asthma. After graduation, she joined the American Lung Association 18 months ago and feels privileged to be working for one of the oldest, most successful non-profit organizations dedicated to health in the United States. “Many people don’t know this,” Ballman shared, “but the American Lung Association, at the turn of the 20th century, sold Christmas Seals to support tuberculosis research.”
Noting that the lungs are 80% to 85% water, Kleyne asked Ballman to identify the top lung issues in the U.S. Ballman cited asthma, both in children and adults. “One-in-ten children have asthma,” Ballman said, “and that number is even higher among poor children and children living in urban areas.” Ballman also cited Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). COPD afflicts older people and used to be known by other names. Both chronic bronchitis and emphysema are considered to be COPD. There is even a condition now known as Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome, where chronic asthma sufferers eventually develop COPD. “The important thing to know about COPD,” Ballman said, “is that the lungs do not get better. Damage is permanent, so the goal is to limit the damage with medication.”
Kleyne, also the founder of Bio-Logic Aqua® Research Water Life Science® and an internationally respected researcher of new water technology, suggested that artificial environments created by air conditioning, forced air heating and insulated walls and windows can also negatively affect lung health and performance. Ballman agreed, adding that exposure to home product pollutants, certain kinds of mold and environmental contaminants exacerbate respiratory illnesses. Kleyne and Ballman agreed that many people take their lungs for granted and should pay more attention to the conditions to which we expose them. “When you can’t breathe,” said Ballman, “nothing else matters.”
