Shelters to Shutters (S2S), a national non-profit that transitions individuals and families from homelessness to economic self-sufficiency, today announced it's participation in Cantor Fitzgerald’s 2017 Charity Day. Joe Theismann, a former star quarterback for the NFL's Washington Redskins and one of the game's most popular broadcasters, will serve as S2S's celebrity ambassador at the event.
Every September, on or around the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, Cantor Fitzgerald holds its Charity Day to honor the 658 Cantor Fitzgerald and 64 Eurobrokers who died in the attacks. On that day, the global financial services group donates 100 percent of its global revenues to the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund – which provides aid to victims of terrorism, natural disasters and other emergencies – as well as dozens of charities around the world. Since its inception, Charity Day has raised $137 million. This year’s event will take place on Monday, Sept. 11, at Cantor Fitzgerald’s New York City office.
"We are truly honored to be selected to participate in this year's Charity Day. There are so many deserving charities doing great work to benefit the lives of others, and we are proud to be recognized as one of those organizations," said Andy Helmer, CEO of S2S, which educates and engages the apartment industry to provide employment and housing opportunities to those experiencing homelessness. "This is a deeply moving event that demonstrates the incredible resilience of the human spirit. Extending a helping hand to those in need and those who are hurting is a very powerful way to continue to memorialize those who died on 9/11 and ensure 'We Never Forget.'"
Charity Day participation is determined by Cantor’s senior management and is based on a number of qualifying factors. All of the charities represented at the event will receive a donation from the total amount raised. Theismann will join other organizations' celebrity ambassadors in raising awareness of their respective causes by taking part in real trades with clients over the phone, guided by a Cantor broker. The general public can participate in Charity Day by donating to The Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund; to do so, they can visit http://www.cantorrelief.org or call (212) 829-4770.
"I am thrilled at the opportunity to represent S2S at this year's Charity Day," Theismann said. "S2S is doing meaningful and inspiring work in the fight to end homelessness, and I have long admired the wide-ranging impact of Charity Day. I know it will be a powerful experience."
S2S is currently partnering with more than 20 apartment management companies – including such major industry players as AvalonBay Communities and Equity Residential – to place people experiencing homelessness in onsite, entry-level jobs and provide them with housing at the same communities at which they work. S2S works with a number of homeless-focused non-profits to identify suitable job applicants.
Since its founding in 2014, S2S and its multifamily partners have moved more than 100 people out of homelessness in markets throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northeast, South and Texas. S2S focuses on the 70 percent of the homeless population who are situationally homeless due to a life-altering event such as job loss, medical or health emergency, divorce, domestic abuse or the loss of a primary income earner. These are people who want to work and return to a life of self-sufficiency but may not receive the governmental support services needed. S2S provides a win-win solution by combating homelessness while providing a pipeline of high-quality, motivated employees for the apartment industry.
